About Metro Health

Surgical Stay

surgeryThe caregivers at Metro Health know that facing a surgical procedure can be a source of anxiety for many patients. That's why our surgery teams focus on two key things: patients and quality.

From the Dan and Eunice Pfeiffer Surgery Center that offers a comfortable waiting area and private consultation rooms for loved ones to talk to doctors... to the prep and recovery area designed to provide patient privacy... to the large surgical suites...everything in Metro Health's surgery department is designed to improve the patient's experience.

Quality

Behind the scenes, that same attention to detail is central to how our clinicians provide their services and why they have been recognized with numerous surgical quality awards.

Metro Health is proud to participate in the Keystone Surgery collaborative. The Keystone initiative includes face-to-face workshops and monthly conference calls with surgical teams and Michigan Hospital Association (MHA) Keystone Center leadership to share learning and measurement tools and other forms of communication. Through the Keystone Surgery project, clinicians are improving patient outcomes by preventing surgical-site infections and preventing errors in the operating room.

In 2008, Metro Health added the daVinci Surgical System as a tool to improve surgical quality. The daVinci system is a state-of-the-art robotic platform that allows surgeons to perform complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions instead of through traditional incisions. Patients are able to recover more quickly and experience less discomfort because of the small incisions.

Evidence of Metro Health's quality in surgery is in some of the awards the organization has won:

  • Repeated Governor's Awards for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting in the category of Surgical Care Improvement Project
  • Surgical Performance Improvement Project (SPIP6) Commitment to Quality Award for efforts to improve the delivery of care by reducing surgical complications
