The Program & Schedule

First Year:

Basic education, foundation of surgical care: surgical metabolism, physiology, surgical infection, wound healing, nutrition, fluids and electrolytes, trauma, critical care.

Rotations include:

General Surgery, Trauma, Nutrition and Critical Care.

Second Year:

Surgical Principles and Technique, increased responsibility and development of skills, in-house subspecialty exposure.

Rotations include:

General Surgery, Burns, Pathology, Thoracic and Vascular, Gynecology and or Urology.

Third Year:

Progressive surgical responsibility and subspecialty rotation. Emphasis on expanded exposure utilizing outstanding out-of-house departments, locally or nationally to greatly enhance the developing experience.

Rotations include:

Pediatric Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery and Trauma.

Fourth Year:

Senior Resident-Expanding responsibility appropriate to the position of senior Resident; total case management, ability in difficult and complicated surgical cases.

Rotations are on General Surgery to perfect skill development and apply experience gained the preceding three years.

Clinics

The department of surgery sponsors an outpatient clinic at the hospital's Breton Health Center, Metro Health Plaza in conjunction with other hospital clinics. Also sponsored is a clinic at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, a 750-bed extended care facility. There is also an inpatient OMM service.
