It's the future of surgery...and it's now available at Metro Health Hospital!
Thanks to generous donations to the Metro Health Hospital Foundation, we're now able to perform prostate surgery using the very latest in surgical technology. Learn more about da Vinci Prostatectomy.
The da Vinci® Surgical System provides an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, which uses small incisions but is typically limited to very simple procedures. The da Vinci System puts a surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. This new category of minimally invasive surgery allows surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.
For the patient, benefits may include:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
- Shorter recovery time
- A faster return to normal daily activities
With da Vinci, small incisions are used to introduce miniaturized instruments and a high-resolution, 3D camera. Seated comfortably at the da Vinci console, your surgeon views a magnified, 3D image of the surgical site.
At the same time, robotic and computer technologies scale, filter and seamlessly translate your surgeon's hand movements into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci instruments, which exceed the natural range of motion of the human hand.
The System cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. Rather, the da Vinci System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon. As your surgeon manipulates the controls,
da Vinci responds to your surgeon's input in real time, translating his or her hand, wrist and finger movements into precise movements of the instruments on the patient-side cart.
